Eugenio Dittborn
An exponent of the neo-vanguard, Dittborn dialogues with Chilean art from the angle of multimedia interaction.
Eugenio Dittborn Santa Cruz was born in Santiago in 1943. He studied drawing, painting and engraving at the University of Chile’s School of Fine Arts from 1961 to 1965.
His training continued in Europe – Spain, Germany and France – where he studied lithography in Madrid’s Escuela de Fotomecánica and Berlin’s Hochschule für Bildene Kunst, and painting in Ecole des Beaux Arts, in Paris.
His work has been linked to avant-garde movements, especially in conceptual art, which has various supports in his work, such as video, photography, engraving, silkscreen and the so-called “Pinturas Aeropostales,” or Airmail Postcard Paintings.
Internationally, Dittborn is a leading exponent of this contemporary artistic practice, which creates its own language. Produced in special formats for dispatch through the mail, Airmail Postcard Paintings represent a speedy and wide-ranging channel for artistic diffusion.
He has shown his work in prestigious museums and galleries of various countries. After his participation in 2004, the Sao Paulo Art Biennial attained international resonance. Among the honors received by Eugenio Dittborn are a Guggenheim Foundation scholarship (USA, 1985) and the National Art Prize awarded by the Chilean Government (2005).
