Abstract
Developed by RIOLAB
The Wall of Chile is a multi-format installation implemented for the Chile Pavilion of the Expo Shanghai 2010.
Physically, the Wall consists of a large interactive touch screen with a surface measuring 4.30 meters wide by 1.30 meters high.
Upon drawing near to the screen, the spectator-user comes across a map of Chile in its length, and upon this map the visitor finds 36 illuminated points that correspond to 36 residents of Chile who were filmed in High-Resolution. Each of their positions was registered by GPS (Global Positioning System).
Francisco Arévalo, Autor.
“The Wall invites the users to explore Chile from what we call an affective connection – those 36 hosts, Chileans from around the country, are placed on a graphic interface of the map of Chile. We also incorporate the products associated with our country, some history, tourist information and anthropological points of interest. This display of a diverse themes and subjects is projected through the architecture of the project, developed and planned by RIOLAB based on the idea of a Media Center.
On this Wall, we seek to give small clues about our identity.”
Words from Francisco Arévalo, author of the project Wall of Chile
The Wall reveals Chile through a touch screen that allows the participant to interact with the physical geography of Chile as well as its territorial and cultural diversity: her people, her history, her cultural geography including voices, music, art, and poetry are all available to the visitor through this display.
THE WALL is a large map that contains the best elements of Chile.
The interaction begins when the user touches one of the 36 illuminated points to activate the corresponding image of a Chilean resident, who then appears with hand raised and resting on the glass of the screen. If the user puts his hand over the image of the resident´s hand, a thrilling journey which is defined according to the user´s choices regarding the length of the visit and the destinations on the map.
The first 36 residents of the Wall of Chile
Powerful new technology permits the Wall to hold this large data base of images of Chile.
More than six hours of video footage, plus thousands of photographs from historical and cultural files, tourism images, satellite images of the universe, nature and architecture, people and their livelihood – all these unfold with a “deep superficiality” permitting the viewer to leave with a solid sensation of Chile and what this country is all about. More than 400 authors and hundreds of institutions, both private and public, contributed directly to this work.
