Expo Shanghai 2010

What is Expo Shanghai 2010?

For more than 150 years, international Expo´s have been by far a privileged space for countries from around the world to present the best of what they have to offer to the world.

Although the origins of such fairs go as far back as the Middle Ages, it was not until 1851 that the first Exposition, as these fairs are known today, was organized. London, then capital of the world’s major power, was the site of the first Expo. For that event, the “Crystal Palace” was built and numerous countries participated. The experience was so successful that it was soon replicated in Dublin (1853), New York (1853) and Paris (1889), where it coincided with the commemoration of the French Revolution.

Throughout the years, these types of encounters have increased in importance, becoming major milestones in which countries can demonstrate their potential and creativity. Countries spend years preparing for these events. Thus, the goal is to produce the best showcase for those months when the eyes of the world will be focused on the Expo.

Shanghai

In 2010, Shanghai will be the site of the World Expo, which it will host for six months. Shanghai, also known as “The City on the Sea”, is the largest city in the People’s Republic of China and has a population close to 20 million.

From an economic point of view, Shanghai is considered the trade and financial center of China. Its power is well represented by its port, which is the largest in the country, and by the many modern skyscrapers in the Pudong financial district.
